A Few Small Bass

I went out to a local mark last night with a friend and we managed a few small bass between us. Unfortunately I didn’t get many pictures, probably the excitement of finally finding a few bars of silver!!! All fish were caught on SP’s, lee had success on the Spro Hula Bait and I managed to catch on the Daiwa D-Fin.

Logo’s for the Fishing Industry

In the past six month’s I have really got into my logo design. I have worked a a designer for 18-20 years and i have to say logo design is the most enjoyable aspect of my job. I love sketching concepts for logo’s and it’s extremely satisfying seeing my logo’s used within the fishing industry.

From Concept To Print

All my logo’s start off with a brief provided by the client, from this brief i will start the concept sketching stage. Next I show the client concepts I believe will work best for them, I then take the chosen design into adobe illustrator and start creating the line art. Once i am happy with the shape of the logo i will then add the clients chosen colours before finalising for proof. Below are a couple of examples of various style logo’s i have created recently.

Spro Trout Master 180

This past weekend I had the pleasure of testing a couple of new spro items, the Trout Master 180 Spinning (3-10g), paired with the Passion Micro 605. The Spro Trout Master 180 spinning rod, is specially designed for casting small spinners and plugs. The rod has a very soft slow action and can really put 3g lures a good distance, it can also put 1.5g lures a decent way. The rod itself is rated 3-10g but I have to say I had a lot more fun catching trout on this rod using a 1.5g jig head than I did using the same lures on my lighter Cormoran ULX 1-9g rated rod.

Spro Trout Master

The slow action on the Trout Master really does help when casting light lures. The only drawback with the slower action is the feel you get from it, theres no problem detecting an aggressive trout bite but this rod wouldn’t be suited for LRF for example, where feel is more important.

Theres no doubt about this is a fun rod to use and has been designed to give great enjoyment when lure fishing for trout. If you are looking for an all round ultra light rod though, I’d personally look elsewhere. The Trout Master is ideal for medium to quick retrieval when spinning with small lures from 1-10g, so for trout fishing it’s pretty much perfect. I would also love to use this rod for Thin Lipped Mullet and light Mackerel spinning, it would certainly provide some great sport.

I am yet to receive the RRP for this rod but would imagine it would be in the £70 – £100 bracket.

First Session for Wild Brown Trout

There’s still not much going on with the bass locally, so I decided to try something completely different over the weekend. Over the years I have always been a sea angler and never really contemplated other forms of fishing, until I took up lure fishing and joined The Lure Forum.

This year I really want to diversify and try other forms of lure angling, trying for various species using a range of techniques. First up for me this year was the pike, and I had some good fun during the cold winter month’s while the sea was quiet. Although the Pike is a new species for me, there are a lot of similarities in the techniques I use while bassing and wrassing. One type of fishing I have always shied away from is LRF, the mere mention of those three letter used to make me cringe! Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not one for fishing in puddles for blennys but there are certain species you can target using LRF, one of which was quite appealing to me, the Wild Brown Trout!

After reading Matthew Pickup’s great report on The Lure Forum, I decided to send him a message to see if he could point me in the direction of some Wild Brownies. Luckily for me Matt was keen to help, so we arranged to meet up so he could show me the techniques he uses. I went armed with various soft plastics ranging from 2″ to 4″ along with some 2g and 3g jigheads. Matt thought it would be best to use the 2″ lures and one of his 1g jigheads, he lent me a couple small lures and off we went.

Wild Brown Trout Country

The first few hours were very slow going, Matt had one small Trout o a micro hard plastic, something I will have to purchase for next time! We kept on the move hoping we would locate a few fish, I tried different speeds of retrieve and various techniques. I then had a couple of small knocks but no hook ups while using a steady fast retrieve. Matt then had another couple of Brownies before I finally hooked into one, it was only a small fish but gave a good account of itself on my Cormoran ULX.

Wild Brown Trout

My First Wild Brown Trout, a stunning looking fish, caught on a 2″ Trout Worm in white and 1g jig head.

Matt was now steadily catching fish on his micro lure while I was getting plenty of plucks but no hook ups. I then see that Matt is into a much better fish as it starts tail walking and jumping, it’s a new lure caught PB for Matt at 40cm, a beautiful looking fish.

Matthew had this stunning looking 40cm Wild Brownie on a micro plug.

We fished on for another hour where i continued to miss bites on the soft plastics, it was pretty frustrating. I did eventually land one more Brown trout (pictured below) before we decided to call it a day.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience of fishing for Wild Brown trout and i will most certainly return. I also plan to try my hand at fly fishing for these beautiful fish this summer.

Logo Design For Photographer & Fishing Presenter

I have had the pleasure of recently designing a new corporate identity for Henry Gilbey. Henry as you all know is a successful photographer, fishing presenter and mad keen angler. Henry really wanted a simple and modern, photography based logo which possibly incorporated his initials, here is what I came up with.

Firstly I designed a strong graphic icon, using the basic outline of a camera with the lens incorporating Henry’s initials HG.

I then set about designing the font to match the logo’s HG typography, the font was based on a mixture of two typefaces.

Lastly I formatted the logo for various applications, here are a selection of logo presentations for the final design.

Fishing Tails Logo

Sean McSeveney contacted me a little while ago, he was in need of a new logo for his popular site fishingtails.co.uk. Sean had no brief as such and just let me do my thing! After sketching various style tails, I eventually came up with the logo below.

Another logo I have been working on is for the lure fishing meet up site, basslurefishing.co.uk. Ed Hennessy from BLF already liked a few of the logo’s I had done, and luckily he liked one which hadn’t been used. I altered the logo to match his needs and Ed was happy, job done!

MOAB

DUO really do make some superb lures and I couldn’t resist photographing these! First up is the MOAB 120F (Mother Of All Baits), here’s a bit of info: MOAB’s comprises of a tight ‘Wobble & Rolling’ action, with emphasis on ‘Rolling’. The lure is designed to create a definite feel for the angler with it’s flat wide bib, the MOAB will dive to 90cm.

Press Bait 90 Fusion

Info: The Press Bait Fusion is a lure with castability rivaling a metal jig, a ‘spoon-like’ swimming action and a realistic look difficult to achieve with metal construction.  Heavy weight and rear-heavy balance gives this lure a great carry distance and quick sinking speed. During retrieval, it swims swinging its tail side-to-side with the line-eye as the pivot.
